Serhiy Wolodymyrowytsch Varlamov ( Ukrainian Сергій Володимирович Варламов , Russian Сергей Владимирович Варламов / Sergei Vladimirovich Varlamov * 21st July 1978 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Ukrainian hockey player , who last until 2016 when HC Donbass from the Ukrainian Hockey League was under contract .
Career
Serhiy Varlamov began his career as a hockey player with the Nelson Maple Leafs, for which he played in a lower class Canadian junior league. In the 1995 CHL Import Draft , the Prince Albert Raiders drew him in the first round as the 41st player. They gave him but immediately from the Swift Current Broncos , for which he was active from 1995 to 1998 in the Western Hockey League . In his last junior season he was the top scorer in the WHL and was voted Player of the Year and member of the All-Star-Team both in the WHL and across leagues in the CHL . During his time with the Broncos he was signed as a free agent by the Calgary Flames on September 18, 1996 , with the Ukrainian only eight times in the National Hockey League on the ice in the five years in the Calgary franchise . Instead, he played for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Saint John Flames , with whom he won the Calder Cup in the 2000/01 season . From 2001 to 2004, the attacker played for the St. Louis Blues , but also mostly completed games for their AHL farm team, the Worcester IceCats .
Then Varlamow returned to Europe, where he began the 2004/05 season at Ak Bars Kazan from the Russian Super League . He then spent three years with their league rivals HK Sibir Novosibirsk before he was signed in the summer of 2008 by Severstal Tscherepowez from the newly founded Continental Hockey League (KHL). During the season, Varlamov left Cherepovets to play for SKA Saint Petersburg - but he only played eight games for SKA in the KHL. He also came to two appearances in the Wysschaja League at HK WMF Saint Petersburg . Before the 2009/10 season he was signed by HK Sokol Kiev , for whom he was on the ice in 22 games in the extra league Belarusian extra league . In December 2009 he was signed by HK Dinamo Minsk .
In June 2010, Varlamow received a contract with the new Ukrainian KHL club, the HK Budiwelnik Kiev. Since this did not take up the game, Varlamow returned to Dinamo Minsk. From May 2011 he was under contract with HK Donbass Donetsk from the Wysschaja Hockey League . In 2012 the club was accepted into the KHL and Varlamow completed over 100 KHL games for Donbass by the end of the 2013/14 season. He also won the IIHF Continental Cup with the club in 2013 and the Ukrainian championship in 2013 with the club's second team . After Donbass had to withdraw from the KHL due to the war in eastern Ukraine , he paused in the 2014/15 season and took part in the Ukrainian ice hockey league with his club in the 2015/16 season . After winning the title there in 2016, he ended his career.
International
For Ukraine , Varlamov took part in the world championships of the top division in 2000 , 2003 , 2004 and 2005 . In 2008 , 2009 , 2010 , 2013 , 2014 and 2015 he played in Division I. He was also part of the Ukraine squad at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the qualifying tournaments for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi .
