Kai Peter Schmitz (born July 7, 1971 in Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains ) is a German football coach .

Career

Schmitz played as a player in the league and studied sports science . Since 2000 he has worked as a coach, including head coach, assistant coach and athletic coach, in the youth team at Borussia Mönchengladbach . At the same time, Schmitz worked as a freelance journalist and wrote, among other things, for the Neue Ruhr Zeitung about the former Bundesliga club MSV Duisburg . In 2006 Schmitz became a video analyst in the scouting department of the professional team under the then head coach Jupp Heynckes . Until 2015, he also held this position under the subsequent head coaches Jos Luhukay , Christian Ziege , Hans Meyer , Michael Frontzeck and Lucien Favre . In the 2015/16 season Schmitz worked under the head coaches Markus Gellhaus , Stefan Effenberg and René Müller as an athletic coach at the second division club SC Paderborn 07 .

For the 2016/17 season , Schmitz became an athletic trainer and video analyst at the then Bundesliga club SV Darmstadt 98 under head coach Norbert Meier . He subsequently exercised this function under Meier's successors Ramon Berndroth , Torsten Frings and Dirk Schuster . After Schuster and his assistant coach were released from their duties on February 18, 2019, Schmitz took over the second division team, which was in 14th place in the table after 22 matchdays, as interim coach. Under his leadership there was a 2-0 home win against Dynamo Dresden on February 23, 2019 . After the game, Dimitrios Grammozis was introduced as the new head coach in Darmstadt, with Schmitz returning to his original position.

Schmitz holds the A license .
