Markus Gellhaus (born June 9, 1970 in Detmold ) is a German soccer coach who is currently under contract with VfL Bochum .

Career

Gellhaus, who grew up in Steinheim , played as a footballer at SV Steinheim, TuS Paderborn Neuhaus , TBV Lemgo and BV Bad Lippspringe .

Afterwards he held the office of youth coordinator at SC Paderborn 07 and in the meantime also looked after the regional league team as head coach. He was also assistant coach under Pavel Dotchev and Jos Luhukay at the regional and second division club SC Paderborn 07 from 2004 to 2006. After Luhukay surprisingly announced his resignation, Gellhaus took over the post as interim coach for three games and scored four points. However, he turned down an offer from Paderborn President Wilfried Finke to take over the post of head coach permanently.

On September 5, 2006, Roland Seitz was finally introduced as the new trainer, whereupon Gellhaus announced his departure from Paderborn after a total of seven years. Since February 2007 he was again Luhukay's assistant coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach . When head coach Jos Luhukay at Borussia Mönchengladbach was dismissed on October 5, 2008 due to differences with the club's management, Gellhaus also left the club on October 8, 2008.

Since April 14, 2009 Gellhaus has been working again at FC Augsburg as assistant coach to Jos Luhukay. At the end of the 2011/2012 season, Jos Luhukay left FC Augsburg and signed a coaching contract with the Bundesliga relegated Hertha BSC . Gellhaus' contract with FC Augsburg was not renewed and he also moved to Berlin. He was released there on February 5, 2015, together with Luhukay.

For the 2015/16 season, he returned as the successor to André Breitenreiter, who had migrated to FC Schalke 04, for the first time in his career as permanent head coach at Bundesliga relegated SC Paderborn 07. At the beginning of October he was released from his job.

During the 2016/2017 season , he was assistant coach to head coach Daniel Stendel at the Bundesliga relegated  Hannover 96 . Both were released from all duties on March 20, 2017 due to unsatisfactory sporting results in the second half of the season.

Since the 2017/18 season he worked as an assistant coach at the second division club FC St. Pauli . There he initially assisted Olaf Janßen , after his dismissal in December 2017 his successor Markus Kauczinski and most recently Jos Luhukay again up to and including June 2020. After Jos Luhukay's dismissal, he was also relieved of his position as assistant coach and accepted an offer from VfL Bochum for the 2020/21 season , where he assists Thomas Reis as assistant coach .
