Hamburg city derby
The Hamburg city derby is the name of the soccer games between Hamburger SV and FC St. Pauli . With 102 clashes, it is one of the most frequently held football derbies in Germany. The following overview includes all competitive games between the first men's teams of these two most successful football clubs in Hamburg .
description
Hamburg is the second largest German city and the largest city in the European Union that is not the capital of an EU member state. The HSV plays its home games in the Volksparkstadion in the district of Bahrenfeld , the stadium of FC St. Pauli is the Millerntor-Stadion on Heiligengeistfeld and is located in the Hamburg district of St. Pauli . Both stadiums are around eight kilometers apart.
background
Although HSV states 1887 as the year of foundation , it was actually founded in 1919 when the Hamburg clubs SC Germania von 1887, Hamburger FC 1888 and FC Falke 1906 merged to form Hamburger SV. FC St. Pauli emerged in 1924 as part of the clean divorce from the Hamburg St. Pauli Turnverein , founded in 1862 .
On October 19, 1924, the first game between the two clubs took place in the Alsterkreis League, which HSV won 3-1; the second leg ended with a 9-0 win for Hamburger SV. The first victory of FC St. Pauli against HSV came on October 19, 1930, when the Kiezkicker won the first game between the two clubs in the Hamburg Oberliga 1-0. The HSV rose to the largest club in the city of Hamburg and finished most seasons in the Alsterkreis-Liga or the Oberliga Hamburg as champions. In the post-war period, HSV continued to be the dominant club in the Hanseatic city, but FC St. Pauli has now become the biggest competitor of Hamburger SV. In the Hamburg City League, HSV finished every season as champions, and in the Oberliga Nord the red pants were the measure of all things, and with the exception of the 1953/54 season, HSV finished the season as champions. HSV was accepted into the Bundesliga in 1963 and belonged to this top division without interruption until 2018, while FC St. Pauli played in the Regionalliga Nord and in the 2nd Bundesliga until 1977. In 1977 St. Pauli was promoted to the Bundesliga, which was the first time since 1963 that the two Hamburg clubs played a league game : 0. The second leg, also played in the Volksparkstadion - until 2002, FC St. Pauli played the home games against HSV in the Volkspark - was won 3-2 by Hamburger SV. At the end of the 1977/78 season, FC St. Pauli was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. It wasn't until the 1986/87 season that the two clubs met again, when HSV won the DFB Cup 6-0 in front of 58,000 spectators in the Volksparkstadion.
From 1988 to 1991, from 1995 to 1997 and in the 2001/02 season, the two clubs met again in the Bundesliga, but the district club was unable to win any of the twelve games. After relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2002, he was passed through to the Regionalliga Nord a year later, before returning to the second division in 2007 and the Bundesliga in 2010. On October 19, 2010, a city derby took place in the Millerntor Stadium for the first time since 1962, and it ended 1: 1. The second leg on February 16, 2011 in the Volksparkstadion won the FC St. Pauli 1-0 with a goal from Gerald Asamoah and won a city derby for the first time since 1977; nevertheless, at the end of the 2010/11 season, they were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. Since HSV was also relegated from the Bundesliga in 2018, there was a Hamburg city derby in the second-highest German division for the first time in the 2018/19 season: the first leg in the Volksparkstadion ended with a goalless draw, the second leg in the Millerntor Stadium ended with a 4 : 0 victory for HSV. HSV's victory was also the Rothosen's first victory in a FC St. Pauli stadium since 1962. In the first leg of the 2019/20 season, FC St. Pauli defeated HSV for the first time since February 13, 1960 in a home game at Millerntorstadion, the end result was a 2-0. The second leg in the Volksparkstadion on February 22, 2020 was won by the Braun-Whites with the same result, which means that after 66 years (most recently in 1953/54) they were once again able to win both local derbies of a season.
Overview of the games
The list includes all competitive games since the two clubs first met. The games of HSV and its predecessor clubs SC Germania, Hamburger FC 1888 and FC Falke 1906 against St. Pauli TV are not included here. Hamburger SV was created in 1919 from the merger of its predecessor clubs; St. Pauli TV had had a football department since 1910, but it was not until 1924 that this department was split off from the club as part of a clean divorce and became independent as FC St. Pauli.
