history

The roots of St. Pauli TV go back to 1852, when the MTV - men's gymnastics club in Hamburg - was founded. This joined on May 1, 1862 with the gymnastics club in St. Pauli and in front of the Dammthore (founded in 1860) to form the same St. Pauli gymnastics club.

In the first decades of the club , gymnastics was the absolute focus of activities, but by the end of the 19th century, point games of the then relatively young and not yet so widespread football game were regularly played on the Heiligengeistfeld . Around 1900 St. Pauli TV was given a large area on the corner of Glacischaussee and Eimsbütteler Str. (Today Budapester Str.), On which the then largest sports hall in northern Germany, with an area of 1100 m², was built with an overwhelming donation from members. In 1906, the members of St. Pauli TV were also called upon to found a games department in which football was to be played in particular . It was not until 1907, however, that enough participants were found to be able to form a team.

In 1910, the games department of St. Pauli TV was included in the North German Football Association. The year 1910 later became the founding date of the well-known "descendant" of St. Pauli TV, namely FC St.Pauli von 1910 eV However , the FC only became an independent club in 1924, when in most gymnastics clubs there was a clear separation between gymnastics and gymnastics Ball games was performed.

In the first half of the 20th century, the focus of the club was still on gymnastics . In 1943, the club's own hall was severely damaged by a bomb attack and after the Second World War it was rebuilt again with considerable donations and with the enormous commitment of the members. In 1962, the city of Hamburg considered it necessary to redesign the Heiligengeistfeld because of the 1963 International Horticultural Exhibition, which resulted in the gym being torn down. St. Pauli TV had to leave its ancestral home - St. Pauli - and was given a new, much smaller domicile in the Neustadt , just a few hundred meters from the old sports facility.

In the course of the last century the gymnastics movement subsided more and more; one of the largest clubs in northern Germany has become more manageable over time.

The end of the 20th century presented gymnastics with new tasks. The pure gymnasts became less and less, but the fitness movement formed. Today, St. Pauli TV sees its task - detached from pure competition and competitive sport - in providing basic services to the neighboring districts.
