In 1843 Hartmann bequeathed the indebted company to three of his sons. Under the name "Ludwig Hartmanns Sons" , Karl Hartmann (* August 26, 1799 - May 31, 1865) took over the management of the white bleaching company acquired by his father in 1811, Eduard Hartmann (* May 6, 1816 - March 10, 1894) Spinning mill in Herbrechtingen and Paul Hartmann sen. (* August 18, 1812; † July 17, 1884) the cotton mill in Heidenheim. Together they achieved the economic rehabilitation of the company. The joint management of the company later failed when Paul Hartmann sen. Acquired the Scheckenbleiche in Heidenheim in 1867 and founded the Paul Hartmann - Bleiche, dyeing business and finishing company. Since the end of the Franco-German War increased the competition began Hartmann , supported by his son Ing. Albert Hartmann (born October 30, 1846. † 20 December 1909), 1873 with the production of cotton wool after one of Victor von Bruns developed Process for degreasing cotton . In 1874, wound dressings were manufactured on an industrial scale. In 1883 the company received its first major order for 400 pounds of cotton wool from the Jakobsspital in Leipzig , which Paul Hartmann sen. in the evening personally packed and provided with labels cut by hand by women, a red cross surrounded by four rods of Aesculapia . The logo was changed to a white cross on a red background for the first time in 1906 because of the risk of confusion with the Red Cross . At the turn of the century, the company was known for its pioneering new dressing materials. It began with the manufacture of sterile bandages. Under General Director Walther Hartmann , the company became a stock corporation in 1912 . In 1920 the company logo was changed again, this time because of its similarity to the Swiss flag .
