The Derby Star sporting goods factory GmbH is a German sporting goods company from the Lower Rhine Goch , which the Danish sports equipment Select Sport A / S belongs. The company's focus is on the production of balls for various sports.
history
Derbystar Sportartikelfabrik GmbH originally came from a leather factory in Goch in the Lower Rhine region. In 1963, besides saddles, gaiters and other leather items, balls were also produced here. In 1968 the company's ball department was completely outsourced and the independent company Derbystar was founded. The name is derived from the company's roots: the part of the name “Derby” comes from equestrian sport and “Star” stands for the alleged quality of the products.
Several professional football clubs played with Derbystar balls, such as the teams from MSV Duisburg , Borussia Mönchengladbach , Werder Bremen , Energie Cottbus and Borussia Dortmund . In the 1979/80 season Derbystar provided the match ball for all Bundesliga clubs. This came to an end with the introduction of a uniform match ball for the Bundesliga in 2010.
In 2011 Derbystar is the official league ball in the Dutch Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie (1st and 2nd league in the Netherlands). In 2017/18 the highest divisions in the Netherlands , Finland , Sweden , Iceland , Denmark and Belgium use Derbystar match balls.
In 1995 Derbystar started aid and health programs for the employees in production and since 2005 Derbystar has been a licensed Fairtrade partner. As part of this, the production facility in Pakistan was approved by the FLO ( Fairtrade Labor Organization ).
From the very beginning, Derbystar specialized in the production of hand-sewn leather balls and was one of the first producers to use synthetic materials instead of leather. At the time, this decision was considered to be trend-setting and has established itself over time, so that even today the balls are only made of synthetic materials.
After the balls were initially still produced in Goch, the production relocated to Hungary and then to Pakistan in the early 1970s. Derbystar still has its production facility for balls there and works exclusively with a production partner, Anwar Khawaja Industries (AKI) in Pakistan.
In the meantime, however, the company does not only focus on hand-sewn balls, but has steadily expanded its range. Derbystar now also sells jerseys, goalkeeper gloves, sports bandages and accessories.
From the 2018/19 season, Derbystar will provide the official match ball for the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 for 4 years .
