The Darwin Awards is a comedy film by the American director Finn Taylor (* 1958) with Joseph Fiennes and Winona Ryder in the leading roles. It was released in US theaters on January 25, 2006 and made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival , where Finn's first film Dream with the Fishes was released in 1997. The film focuses on unusual deaths, some of which are based on the Darwin Awards .

action

The profiler Michael Burrows has to quit the police, because he faints at the sight of blood and a serial killer escapes him. Obsessed with unusual deaths, Burrows takes numerous precautionary measures. He decides to turn his hobby into a profession and applies to an insurance company, where he is supposed to investigate a series of deaths and damages with the insurance agent Siri to test the method he propagated for assessing potential insurance customers. Since his time in the police force, he has been filmed by a student documentary filmmaker who turned Burrows' work into his exam project and can only be seen in the film at the very end.

Much of the film is narrated in documentary style, interrupted by flashbacks of selected accidents: Harvey equips his car with a rocket drive to impress his girlfriend Juleen; in another case, two ice anglers Bob and Tom try their hand at dynamite fish, sinking their brand new SUV; Another scene shows two rock fans (Simon and Farley) who are a bit plain in their minds trying to get to a concert. Other accident scenes include a yuppie who throws himself off a skyscraper right at the beginning of the film while trying to demonstrate to his friends that his window panes are safe from breakage; another yuppie (Emile) who tries to outsmart a vending machine and is buried under it, and a married couple (Henry and Carla) who mistakenly think their motor home has automatic controls. While traveling across the country, Burrows and Siri get closer, and in the end, Burrows even manages to get a grip on his fears and catch the serial killer (Perp) he let escape at the beginning of the film.

Others

Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage of MythBusters play the vendors in an Army store selling rocket propulsion. However, this episode (just like the ice fishing episode) is one of the myths that Hyneman and Savage debunked in the MythBusters. In one scene, two fans try to come to a Metallica concert, with the band musicians (like Lars Ulrich ) also playing a supporting role. In one scene, Lawrence Ferlinghetti plays himself writing a travel guide. The film was the last film by Chris Penn , who passed away the day before the premiere.
