James "Jamie" Franklin Hyneman (born September 25, 1956 in Marshall , Michigan ) is an American special effects expert, best known for his work as a leading actor in the series MythBusters .

Life

Hyneman grew up on a farm in Columbus , Indiana . According to his own statement, he was a “difficult child who moved out at the age of 14 and hitchhiked through the country”. He later studied literature and the Russian language. Hyneman has been married to teacher Eileen Walsh since 1989. He is an atheist and a member of the Skeptics Society .

He holds several patents, including a remote control unit for stabilizers. He is also a long-standing member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the American film actors' association.

Career

Hyneman ran a diving school with boat charter services in the Caribbean for several years . He has also worked as a survival expert, linguist, pet shop owner, animal catcher, owner of a rescue company, machinist and cook.

After that he found his way into the film industry and worked for several production companies. Later he oversaw the production of models and special effects for hundreds of commercials and films as managing director at “Colossal Pictures”. He participated in more than 800 television advertisements, among other things he is responsible for advertisements for 7 Up , Nike , Industrial Light and Magic as well as some American automobile companies. He was also responsible for the visual effects of the production of Top Gun , the Matrix sequels, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and Episode II, as well as many other films .

In the 1990s, Hyneman took part in the Robot Wars show format with his robot Blendo .

In 1997 he founded the special effects workshop M5 Industries in San Francisco . From 2003 to 2016, the television series MythBusters was shot there with Hyneman and Adam Savage as the main actors

In the eighth season of the series CSI: On the trail of the perpetrators , Hyneman and Savage had a cameo appearance as laboratory technicians.

Hyneman and Savage also had speaking roles together in an episode of the 23rd season of the television series The Simpsons , in which Mythbusters was parodied.

Honors

In 2017, Jamie Hyneman was awarded an honorary doctorate from Lappeenranta Technical University .
