action

Dinky Bossetti is a high school student and outsider who lives in the small town of Clyde, Ohio. She spends a lot of time with her pets. Her classmate and son of a dentist, Gerald Howells, is interested in her.

Bossetti has been adopted and is convinced that the famous Roxy Carmichael is her real mother. Denton Webb once had an affair with Roxy Carmichael. The small town is preparing for a visit from Carmichael. Dinky tells the community that her alleged mother will take her with her after the visit. The adoptive parents are looking for a special school for Dinky.

Dinky befriends the school psychologist Elizabeth Zaks. Zaks defends the girl from the other teachers who think Bossetti is inappropriate.

The day of the expected visit is coming. Bossetti waits for Roxy Carmichael with a packed suitcase, but she does not appear. Instead, only Roxy's letter with apologies is read to the assembled congregation.

Denton tells Dinky that she can't be his and Roxy's daughter because the baby has died. Dinky makes an appointment with Gerald and kisses him.
