Show Me a Hero is a six-part US miniseries that aired on HBO from August 16 to August 30, 2015 . The German premiere was from January 18 to February 22, 2016 on Sky Atlantic HD .
The series was based on the non-fiction book Show Me a Hero by Lisa Belkin, published in 2000 and based on true events. The script was written by David Simon and William F. Zorzi and Paul Haggis directed .
action
The focus of the action, which takes place from 1987 to 1993, is the social and political events of the Westchester County town of Yonkers in north New York City .
When the US federal judge Leonard B. Sand decreed the desegregation of the city of Yonkers in 1987 , there was an outcry from the predominantly white population, which quickly affected the political climate of the offices in the town hall. The ruling provides for the construction of several new social houses in the city, which means that the white middle class, who have previously been separated from the black and Latin American residents, worries about their security, real estate and land prices. In the mayoral election campaign, the young city councilor Nicholas "Nick" Wasicsko, a former police officer, took up the topic and was then surprisingly elected as the successor to the long-established mayor Angelo Martinelli.
However, the new mayor has to relent quickly when it turns out that an appeal against the order in the Supreme Court would be unlikely to succeed, and the court would impose heavy fines on the city if the order were not implemented. The situation is made more difficult by a majority in the city council, which votes against the ruling. City councilor Henry "Hank" Spallone in particular uses the mood in the white population for his populist purposes, which means that from now on every city council meeting is accompanied by angry and angry demonstrations.
Background and production
According to screenwriter William F. Zorzi work on started Show Me a Hero in 2002, shortly after his job as editor of the Baltimore Sun had quit. He previously received Lisa Belkin's book of the same name from David Simon , his former work colleague at the newspaper. The series became a long-term project on which both worked for over a decade, as both Simon and Zorzi were involved in other projects such as The Wire (2002-2008) or Treme (2009-2013) during this time . HBO already held the filming rights to the book at that time .
For David Simon, telling Nick Wasicsko's story is what drives a writer. At the same time, however, he saw the series fail if the character drawing of the figure did not fit. For this reason, Simon hired Oscar Isaac , who has already received awards for his acting performances in Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) and A Most Violent Year (2014).
Director Paul Haggis already agreed without reading the script first and took over the direction of all six episodes. For Haggis it was the first time that he only directed, as he usually also writes the scripts. The reason he cited was that it was important for him to work with David Simon.
Filming for the series began on October 1, 2014 and ended on January 25, 2015. Show Me a Hero was filmed on location in Yonkers .
The title of the series comes from the quote “Show me a hero and I'll write you a tragedy” by the American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald .

reception
The reviews of Show Me a Hero were extremely positive. For Metacritic 85% of 33 reviews are positive, for Rotten Tomatoes it is 96% of 68 reviews.
The conclusion of the German press is also positive. For Lars Weisbrod from Zeit Online , Show Me a Hero is “the compulsory series of the summer” because David Simon “shows again why we need him as a narrator” and the “story fits current events here with us”. Andreas Busche from Spiegel Online also praises the script, which for him is “thematically and formally a return to the concentrated, almost journalistic quality of The Wire ”. Ursula Scheer from Faz.net judges that Show Me a Hero should not be "read solely as a parable on xenophobia", rather the series shows the "ineffectiveness of political processes, not as a show of intrigue [...] as in House of Cards , but in musty little-small of a medium-sized town [...] ”.
