action

The immigrant Abel Morales achieved some prosperity with a heating oil trade in New York in 1981, which is demonstrated by the fact that he moves into a luxurious new house. So that his company can expand, he wants to buy an oil terminal on the river from an Orthodox Jewish businessman. After he has paid 40 percent of the purchase price in cash, he has 30 days for the remaining amount. He has already received a loan from his long-term bank. But there are problems: For some time now, strangers have been attacking his tanker trucks and hijacking them. They are later found with an empty tank. Julian, one of his drivers, is also the victim of a robbery. Morales visits him in the hospital and takes care of him. One evening he notices a burglar at his house and drives him away. His little daughter later finds a loaded pistol in the bushes. A newly hired sales representative is knocked down and deposited in a garbage dump. Yet he refuses to equip his drivers with weapons, as the union demands of him. His wife accuses him of not doing anything about the violence and secretly gets a gun. When he finds out, there is a heated argument between the two.

Attorney Lawrence is investigating the industry and has also put together 16 charges against Morales. Obviously, it is "cheating" that is customary in the industry. Morales, who is considered an honest businessman, suspects that an example should be made of him. His wife, who is responsible for bookkeeping, goes through the files from the last few years in order to clarify suspicious incidents. Before a house search, the couple removed the files just in time.

On his first mission after recovering from his injuries, Julian is attacked again. However, he has now got himself a pistol and a shootout ensues that also endangers bystanders. He and the attackers flee from the police. The resulting headlines prompted the bank to refuse Morales the loan. This provides a three-day extension of the deadline and can take out loans from two competitors, but on very poor terms. He also loaned an apartment building that he and his younger brother owned, and for whose written consent he visited him at his school. Morales meanwhile tracks down Julian and wants to hand him over to the police. When he is transferred, he escapes again.

After one of his tank trucks was attacked again, Morales was able to track the hijacked vehicle. When the truck tips over on the chase, one of the two robbers is killed. He pursues the other on foot and can catch him. Morales beats up the robber and threatens him with the pistol he took from him to find out the names of the employers. Although the robber does not reveal this, he lets him go. As a thank you, the badly injured robber gives him the name of the place where he last sold at least one truckload and says he doesn't work for anyone. Morales found out that it was the business of the dealer Arnold Klein, and asked him to reimburse the entire damage he had caused by the stolen oil.

His wife - daughter of a criminal businessman from whom Morales had bought the company - surprises him with an account to which she had diverted half a million dollars from the company over the years in case of a crisis. Although he accuses his wife of stealing from him, he is finally ready to take the money and can therefore waive the loan from his competitor Lorente. After the purchase is complete, Morales is visiting the property with his wife and advisor Walsh when Julian shows up and threatens them with a gun. He also had a dream of achieving something like Morales and sees himself as a big loser. After Morales promises to take care of his family, Julian shoots himself.

Morales calls the police. The attorney who joined the company, Lawrence, congratulated him on the purchase of the warehouse. He is impressed by how much Morales has accomplished in his short time as a businessman and suggests that he now has a position where he has great political influence in the city.
