The Espace Jean-Tinguely – Niki-de-Saint-Phalle is a museum in Freiburg im Üechtland with works by the artist couple Jean Tinguely (1925–1991) and Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002).

Since it was founded in 1998, it has been managed by the Freiburg Museum of Art and History , but managed by a foundation. The museum was created as a result of Niki de Saint Phalles' will to donate works by Jean Tinguely to the canton of Friborg . It gradually came into the possession of further donations and works, not least works by de Saint Phalles.

history

From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, there was a chapel and a cemetery at the site of today's museum, which belonged to a monastery that is still right next to it today. Thereafter, the site became fallow until the architect Léon Hertling built the first depot of the Freiburg tram in 1899 . The depot offered space for eight cars on four tracks with a rotating outer platform. The interior consisted of the storage hall in the front and a workshop in the back. The depot had an area of 500 m² and a height of 6 m, equipped with ceiling lighting.

The building has an imposing facade made of molasse and neo-baroque columns and gables. The choice of a monumental facade on the street side between two churches underlines the representative character that was intended for the building.

In 1948 the building was converted into the “Burggarage”. This was related to the advent of the automobile, but did not completely change the character of the building. After successive donations by Niki de Saint Phalle, the place was converted into an art museum, which lasted from 1996 to 1998. Architect Michel Waeber planned the renovation. The museum opened on March 16, 1998.
