The Museum of Art and History Freiburg ( French Musée d'art et d'histoire de Friborg , MAHF for short) is a museum in Freiburg in Üechtland . It collects and exhibits works from the canton of Friborg .
building
The Museum of Art and History Freiburg is housed in two main buildings: in the Ratzéhof, a city palace from the 16th century, and in a former slaughterhouse, which is opposite on the other side of Murtenstrasse. An underground passage connects the two parts of the museum. The arrangement of the halls goes back to the renovation in 1981. Both buildings are on the list of cultural assets of national importance in the canton of Friborg .
history
In 1774 Tobias Gerfer laid the foundation stone for the city's first public collection when he bequeathed his collection of medals to the Jesuit College. The cantonal museum was set up at the same location in 1823. In 1922 the museum, which has meanwhile been enriched by collections from the secularized Hauterive monastery and donations, moved into the Ratzéhof.
