Ernest Hiram Brülhart (born October 14, 1878 in Freiburg im Üechtland ; † March 22, 1947 ibid) was a Swiss painter . He painted landscapes , figures , still lifes , portraits and views of cities and villages.

Life

Ernest Hiram Brülhart first became an engineer before completing Ferdinand Hodler's lessons at the Musée industriel in Friborg - at the suggestion of the painter Joseph Reichlen . Then he went to Paris , where he first attended the Académie Julian around 1900 and then the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . He traveled frequently, visiting Saint-Tropez , Bucharest (where he was invited by his friend René de Weck ) and Venice , among others . Back in Friborg, he became a teacher at the École des arts et métiers, where he had among other things Gaston Thévoz as a student.

In addition to landscape painting, Brülhart's artistic focus was primarily on portraits. In Friborg he gained a reputation as an outstanding portrait painter and made portraits of Georges Python , Achille Blancpain and René de Weck, among others . Ernest Hiram Brülhart left around 3000 works.

Appreciation

While Brülhart was able to make a living from painting during his lifetime, he was increasingly forgotten after his death. The art historian Philippe Clerc deals with the painter and tries to make him accessible to a wider public. A publication about Brülhart was published; In addition, in 2019 there was an exhibition with around 40 works by the painter in the counter hall of the Freiburger Kantonalbank .
