action

Pippa Lee has been married to successful publisher Herb Lee for decades. He is 30 years older than her and is already celebrating his 80th birthday. Their children Grace and Ben are now going their own way. After several heart attacks by Herb, the couple move from New York to a "retirement settlement" in Marigold Village, Connecticut . The exciting life in New York high society comes to an end. But it is not Pippa who has problems with life in the retirement home, but Herb, who feels as if he is buried alive. He now runs his publishing house over the phone, which is more of a stress for him than before. Pippa is worried about his health. At the same time, strange things are happening in her house, which Herb initially attributes to his senile dementia . When they install cameras to gain certainty, they discover that Pippa is sleepwalking and that she is responsible for the turbulence in the house. Pippa therefore begins to think about her life.

As a child, she suffered from her mother, Suky, who was addicted to pills. To escape her, she moved out of her home as a teenager. First, she stayed with her aunt Trish in Greenwich Village , who had a lesbian relationship with the photographer Kat. When Kat organized an erotic photo session with Pippa, they were caught by their aunt. Pippa felt complicit in the breakup of this relationship, she took refuge in drugs. Only when she met the publisher Herb Lee did calm seem to come into her life. Herb ( Alan Arkin ) was so in love with the wild young woman that he left his wife Gigi ( Monica Bellucci ) for her.

After years of marriage, this relationship now seems to be over. Pippa falls in love with the neighbor's son Chris Nadeau. However, a love affair only develops when Pippa realizes that Herb is cheating on her with the young Sandra Dulles. Without any hysteria, she ends her marriage and starts a new life with Chris.

Reviews

“Over the stretches the film is amusing with brilliant supporting roles, Winona Ryder, Julianne Moore, Monica Bellucci pop up and down. [...] But somehow The Private Lives of Pippa Lee is way too sweet, too smooth, too predictable and also too long. "

“A gently ironic tragic comedy about female dilemmas in pre-emancipatory role models. The film alternates between the present and the youth of the main character, which sometimes slows the narrative flow; Nevertheless, both narrative levels convince with well-contoured character images, pointed dialogues and excellent actors.
