Marble Hill is separated from most of Manhattan, which is located on the island of the same name, by the Harlem River Ship Canal . The canal was built in a winding loop of the Harlem River in 1895 to save boat traffic from traveling through it. Marble Hill, enclosed on three sides by the loop of the river, which was previously part of Manhattan Island, became an island through the construction of the canal itself. In 1914, the original loop of the river was filled in, so that Marble Hill has been connected to the Bronx on the mainland ever since . After a judge ruled in 1939 that Marble Hill still belonged to the Manhattan borough despite these drastic geographic changes, Marble Hill was referred to as the Sudetenland of the Bronx by the then mayor of the Bronx , referring to the 1938 annexation of the Sudetenland by Hitler alluded to.

Marble Hill is still part of a constituency that includes Washington Heights and Inwood , the northernmost areas of Manhattan, but receives public services from the Bronx.

The United States Postal Service has Marble Hill in the distribution of postal codes ( ZIP Code treated) as a part of the Bronx.

The name Marble Hill goes back to a large marble deposit located under the quarter . The so-called Inwood marble was quarried there earlier and used as a building material.
