history
The first part of Broadway Seventh Avenue Local opened on June 3, 1917. The first section of this route extended south from Times Square on 42nd Street to 34th Street Penn Station . The subway was later extended to South Ferry . In addition, a kind of turnoff to Wall Street was built via Chambers Street . Today there is line 2 and line 3 to Brooklyn . This was opened on June 1, 1918.
On August 21, 1989, a skip-stop service was inaugurated with line 9 on the route north of 135th City College , but it was discontinued on May 27, 2005. In the attacks on September 11, 2001, the Cortlandt Street station was badly damaged. As a result, the line had to be rerouted for some time via line 3 to Brooklyn to the endpoint New Lots Avenue. Due to the impassability of the Cortlandt-St station tunnel, a new tunnel was built around the old Cortlandt Street station, where a new station was supposed to open, but this did not happen, which is why line 1 continues to run through a shell of a station today.
On March 16, 2009, a new stop was opened: South Ferry. When Hurricane Sandy raged in New York in November 2012, the new stop was so flooded that it will not be passable until 2016. Therefore, on April 4, 2013, the old station was temporarily reopened. Due to the insufficient length of the platform in the station, which is designed as a turning loop , only the first five cars of a train can stop at the platform, which is indicated along the entire line and in the cars with notices and announcements in Rector Street station.
