125th Street (Manhattan)
The 125th Street crosses New York City's borough Manhattan . It is considered the main street of Harlem and is also called Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard .
Location and course
East of Morningside Avenue , 125th Street runs straight through Harlem from west to east until it becomes the feeder of FDR Drive on the East River and the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge .
West of Morningside Avenue, 125th continued on old Manhattan Avenue. It runs in a north-westerly direction diagonally through the districts of Manhattanville and Morningside Heights until, after the intersection with 130th Street, it becomes the feeder of the Henry Hudson Parkway on the Hudson River . This rededication of Manhattan Avenue to 125th Street came after old 125th Street west of Morningside Avenue had to give way to large apartment blocks for people on low incomes. What remains of the old 125th Street in this area is now called La Salle Street , which extends from Amsterdam Avenue to Claremont Avenue .
Many sections of the street have been gentrified since the late 1990s and upgraded with stores like MAC Cosmetics , Old Navy , H&M , CVS / pharmacy or the Magic Johnson Theaters (cinema). The famous Apollo Theater is also located here . In cooperation with the neighborhood and the city, a development plan for the 125th Street corridor has been drawn up. The aim is to further develop its strengths as a space for art and culture.
The proposal to convert 125th Street into a kind of Trans-Harlem- Expressway (Trans-Harlem-Expressway) came to an end when the funds for the intended 125th Street Hudson River Bridge were canceled.
geology
A grave breach in the earth's crust runs under the street and is considered the 125th Street Fault ( English fault , fault '), respectively. This fault created a valley deep enough that the IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line required a trestle bridge between 122nd Street and 135th Street . In the 18th century the road here was The Hollow Way (The narrow pass) called.
