Washington Heights is a neighborhood in New York City in the north of Manhattan Island . The name comes from Fort Washington , which was built there, at Manhattan's highest point, as a defense during the American Revolutionary War .

Washington Heights borders Harlem to the south at 155th Street and Inwood to the north (Hillside Avenue) . The border is marked by the Hudson to the west and the Harlem River and Coogan's Bluff to the east .

The population today consists largely of emigrants from the Dominican Republic . The quarter offers cheaper living space and people tend to leave when they move up. There are also areas with significant Jewish populations.

The most representative part of Washington Heights is Hudson Heights . It is located on the Hudson in the northwest of the neighborhood. Because of its own character, it is considered a neighborhood within a neighborhood. In the 1930s, many Jewish Germans and Austrians who fled the Nazis moved here - including Henry Kissinger . Their number was estimated at around 60,000 in the 1940s. These emigrants called the quarter “Frankfurt-on-the-Hudson” because a large number of immigrants came from Frankfurt am Main , or “Fourth Reich” as an ironic antithesis to Hitler'sThird Reich ”.
