The Route nationale 40 , N 40 or RN 40 for short , is a French national road that was laid down in 1824 between Calais and the Belgian border near Oost-Cappel. It goes back to route 62 impériale. It consisted of two parts that were separated by the N16. The total length was 55 kilometers. In 1933 the part between Bergues and Oost-Cappel was signposted as N16 A and the N40 from Dunkerque continued near the coast to the Belgian border at Bray-Dunes. It was also extended from Calais to Le Havre, where it was interrupted in two places by other national roads. Their total length after this extension was 257.5 kilometers. In 1973 the N40 and its side branches were downgraded. One section ran from Le Havre to Fécamp, another from Criel-sur-Mer to Le Tréport and the third from Eu to the Belgian border at Bray-Dunes. When it was downgraded in 1973, the N1 national road took over the section from Calais to the Belgian border, which was downgraded in 2006. For long stretches it is only a few kilometers from the coast of the English Channel . In addition, the road has three short branches that connect it to the N1, which runs parallel in the area a few kilometers away.
