history

Tourism and Customs

The tourism plays a major role especially in the summer. The place then grows to around 70,000 inhabitants, who are spread over the various districts and the campsites. A special feature is the police-centered local structure: unlike in many tourist strongholds, the animation offers and shopping / strolling opportunities are not concentrated in one center. In many districts there are night markets, evening concerts and the “BarcaDance” dance evenings. The main venue is the central Place de la République in the Village district . The classic market also takes place here.

A few kilometers north of the historic center is the modern La Grande Plage district . This is where the municipality's landmark is located, the ship “ Le Lydia ”.

The Lydia , a former cargo and passenger ship that was set on the sand on the coast, is the symbol of Le Barcarès.

Le Barcarès still belongs to Roussillon and is therefore also influenced by Catalan, which is reflected in numerous festivities. Especially at the “Bodega” at the end of August, the old town center is decorated with Catalan flags.

A highlight in the calendar of events is the "Fête des Pêcheurs" fishing festival on August 15th. During the day, the jousting, the so-called "joutes setoises", attracts tourists to the port. In the evening there is a large fireworks display , which is accompanied by music and therefore advertised as a “spectacle pyro-musical”.
