Tourist importance

Due to its location in a very windy region, the Étang de Leucate is one of the most important windsurfing areas in the French Midi . The shallow water - especially on the Leucate side - offers surfing beginners extensive opportunities to practice, especially since the holiday resorts of Port Leucate have numerous and inexpensive accommodations (compared to the usual costs in southern France).

Economical meaning

The Étang des Leucate is one of the centers of oyster and mussel farming in the south of France , with oyster and mussel farmers operating exclusively in the Leucate district. On the connecting road between Leucate Plage and Port Leucate , at an outflow of the Étang to the sea, there is a Center Ostréicole , where oysters and mussels are sold “fresh from the harvest”.
