Jazz is different is the eleventh regular studio album by the German punk rock band Die Ärzte (the band's 20th album in total), which was released on November 2, 2007. The album reached number one in the album charts and was awarded two times platinum in Germany. Three singles were released: Boy , Song of Failure and Lasse talk . In addition, at the end of 2009 they published the triple-A page HimmelblauPerfektBreit , which reached number 26.
The album was produced by Die Ärzte, mixed and additionally produced by TeamTonic (Mirko Schaffer, Oliver Zülch, Philipp Hoppen and Rico Spitzner).

background

After Die Ärzte published their last studio album Noise in 2003 , Bela B. , Farin Urlaub and Rodrigo González pursued solo activities. Urlaub released the solo album Am Ende der Sonne and the live album Live Album of Death in 2005 and then went traveling for a year. Bela B. released the solo album Bingo in 2006 , and Rodrigo González joined the band Downward .

On December 31, 2006 - on the occasion of a New Year's Eve concert in the sold-out Rheinenergiestadion Cologne - the band announced that a joint studio album would follow in autumn 2007. This announcement caused great joy among fans, as there had been repeated speculations about a possible band breakup. For the first time since 1984 (at the time for the album Debil ) the band worked without a leading producer and took over this task at Jazz ist anders itself. In principle, Die Ärzte had planned to produce the album largely on their own; even the band photos were taken with a self-timer . The release was followed by the sold-out tours "Es wird tight" in November / December 2007 and "Jazzfäst" from May to August 2008.

For the enormous sales of this record, Die Ärzte received the World Music Award 2008.

Promotion, packaging and content

As a promotion, the album was titled “Jazz isst different” before it was released, which led some fans to speculate about a second concept album after Le Frisur , this time about cooking and eating. Not only have the individual titles on the album been renamed (e.g. kitchen boy instead of boy or mold blue instead of sky blue ), the entire discography has also been changed to match the topic of cooking, similar to deleting Bela from the band's biography for the release of the single " Things of which ”from the album Noise .

The packaging of the CD version is similar to a pizza box and measures approx. 130 × 130 × 20 mm. The vinyl version, which is also available in a pizza box, comes with an internet voucher with which the buyer can download the songs free of charge in MP3 format (256 kbps). The record itself is a picture LP , with the A side representing a pizza topping and the B side a pizza base. The 7 ″ bonus EP is a tomato slice.

The bonus EP also has the hidden track Take it like a man (aka Kurt Cobain) , which is located on the CD before the actually first track or appears as the fourth song of the EP in the MP3 download. On the vinyl version, the hidden track is on the B-side after the third track.

Singles

"Boy"

On October 5th, before the album was released, the first single Junge was released , a typical medical first release from the pen of Farin Urlaub with hard guitar riffs, a catchy chorus and ironic text about the so-called "youth of today".

The video had its world premiere on September 14th on MTV , but in the version defused to protect minors. The uncensored version won't be seen on TV until 10 p.m. The two songs The most beautiful song in the world and I'm sorry by Bela B. act as B-sides.

Junge was covered by Heino in 2013 on the album Mit freundlichen Grüßen .

"Song of failure"

On January 18, 2008, the second single was released, Song of Failure , in which Bela B. sings that everyone is best when he does not care what he does. The B-side contains the Farin-Urlaub-Composition ( Nothing seen) , which is not on the album , two album tracks in the "economy version", and again the video for the single. The single also reached the top ten on the sales charts.

"Let me talk"

The third single, Lasse redn , followed on April 11th, 2008 , a "pure" pop song by Farin Urlaub with bitter lyrics about bullying and curious neighbors. In the video to acted Martin Klempnow with that already on Anti-Zombie from the album sound was involved, and in the video for the 2003 single published things of which occurred. Here he plays the text in sign language . Lasse redn enjoyed extremely high success (top ten placement in the single charts and permanent radio use, which was reflected in number 1 in the annual charts of various radio stations). In addition to two “economy versions” and the video, the single also contains the Bela B. composition Komm zu Papa .

A shortened version of Lasse redn was briefly broadcast on the radio station Antenne Bayern , in which a "Bild" -critical passage ("... most people get their education from the image. And that consists of fear, hate, if you didn't know , Tits and the weather report ”) was cut out. The song was only played completely again after listeners protests. The broadcaster, 16% of which is owned by the Axel Springer Group , which publishes the "Bild" newspaper , denied the censorship and instead referred to "broadcast technical reasons".

"Perfect Sky Blue Wide"

On December 4, 2009, over a year and a half after the last release, the triple A single PerfectHimmelblauBreit was released as the fourth and final single with its video, which was over ten minutes long. There are three album tracks, one from each of the three Ärzte-Composers: Perfect (Bela B.), Himmelblau (Farin Urlaub) and Breit (Rodrigo Gonzalez), which otherwise have nothing to do with each other in terms of content.

The accompanying videos (which one after the other result in a single one) show the respective band members visibly aged in the retirement home. In addition to the CD version, the single was also released on a 12 "vinyl record with a triple helix, on which the songs are pressed in parallel and you cannot choose exactly which song you want to play.

For the tour “Es wird tight” and “jazzfäst” the doctors sold a CD exclusively for € 7.00, which is an alternative version of the album entitled “Jazz is different economy”. This is a version of the album that the doctors recorded under live conditions in the rehearsal room, changing both the melodies and the lyrics massively. In addition to the 16 titles - as also contained on the original album - there is a short hidden track on the album, which is a short version of the song What has the boy but for nerves .

Further economy versions are on the single releases of Jazz ist anders , u. a. from the B-sides of previous single releases. In contrast to the CD version, the vinyl version is not sold exclusively at concerts, but is also offered by authorized dealers and can also be ordered online.

The title, concept and presentation refer to a volume from the comic series Didi & Stulle by the Berlin draftsman Fil , who had redrawn the regular comic album One in one page for page for a reprint in a reduced format . The volume Didi & Stulle an inside economy appeared on poorer paper, without color, poorly drawn and (according to the author) also with worse gags.

At a concert on December 5, 2007 in Zurich in the Hallenstadion, the doctors called on fans not to vote for Christoph Blocher in the Swiss Federal Council elections, and in return offered the prospect of offering the album as a free download. After Blocher had missed the majority, the doctors put the economy version of Jazz is different free of charge under the motto “A promise is a promise” on their homepage. However, the download was limited to Internet users from Switzerland.

reception

The criticism of the music magazine Laut.de recognizes in the album besides punk pieces some guitar pop, your girlfriend is real funk. It criticizes “tasteless artwork”, “The pizza is cold”, the music is “tough dough”. The titles of which “little sticks” sound “typical”. "The doctors are no longer as funny as one would expect". Only Nur Ein Kiss sticks out lyrically and musically from the "cultivated boredom". Other pluses are The Light At The End Of The Coffin , which "reminds of the old doctors" and a cute love song . Mathias Möller headed his review accordingly with "Contains just too much irrelevant filling material."
