Seitenhirsch is a complete edition of all published albums and an unreleased album by the German punk rock band Die Ärzte . The compilation was released on December 14, 2018 in the form of a box set with eleven books and 33 audio CDs.

After years of planning, the compilation came out in a 30 centimeter wide, dark-colored box with 33 CDs in it. According to the statements of the band members Bela B. and Rod, these represent the publication of the entire oeuvre of the band. However, the band did not rule out the possibility that titles could be missing. The entire work appears on the label And More Bears , a label founded by Richard Weize after he left Bear Family Records . Both the new label and Bear Family had gained particular notoriety for the release of special box sets. In the course of the promotion of Seitenhirsch, the band also announced that in spring 2019 under the title They've Given Me Schrott! - The outtakes of the previously unreleased tracks are to be released as a triple album.

The band was already very enthusiastic about the Bear Family boxing sets. At the very beginning of her career, the Buddy Holly box set also played a role, which Farin Urlaub received as a gift after a failed autograph session and which influenced the song Buddy Holly's glasses . Earlier they had the idea of ​​publishing their entire oeuvre on the label after they were dissolved, but after the brief dissolution between 1988 and 1993, "the idea somehow slipped out of focus." The final idea for the compilation finally came from Richard Weize , one of the most important archivists in the rock world and former head of the Bear Family label, and Bela B. The contact came about when Bela B. spoke in an 800-page Elvis audio book for Weize. The work on the complete work took a total of two years, during which archives were searched, unlabeled master tapes listened to and the rights clarified. The mastering was done by Christian Zwarg.

The unusual title is a word that emerged from an internal joke of the band and ran through the band's career as a kind of running gag , but has now also been picked up by other bands such as the Beatsteaks . The meaning is kept mysterious.

The start of sales was originally announced on November 16, 2018. However, the delivery was postponed to December 14th for technical reasons.

Geschwisterliebe is the only song that is not included in its original version, as the song was indexed by the federal inspection agency for media harmful to minors and has not yet been released. Instead, an instrumental version was used under the title … Love .

Included songs

A total of 722 titles are included. In addition to the tracks contained on the regularly released albums, previously unreleased demo recordings , B-sides , and single versions were released in the box. The 33 CDs are distributed over eleven books or media books. The retrospective begins with the cassette demo The Funny Astronaut , which comes from a cassette that Farin Urlaub sold in the schoolyard. The compilation ends with the titles of the live album / live DVD Die Nacht der Demonen from 2013. The box is sorted in strict chronological order. The albums are not strictly separated from each other, as is customary with other releases, but rather begin and end in the middle of the sound carrier. Shortly after the box was released, displeasure spread among the band's fans. Fans complained about a number of errors in the content and mastering of the box:

At least up to and including the album Planet Punk everything was covered by vinyl. Against this measure, it was argued that there are digital versions of the majority of the songs of perfect quality that could have been used. In addition, there was no normalization of the songs, which means that all songs and albums have a different volume. In addition, fans complained about the lack of some songs in the box: Help! , The Doctors (Live) and Shitpiece . From Medley (Live) and Yoko Ono (Do Brasil) a longer version of the CD or vinyl single missing. In addition, the different versions of the song Men Are Pigs of the album MC, the album vinyl and the single CD are missing , all of which differ through different samples in the middle part of the song. By transferring from vinyl, errors occurred with several songs, which meant that they played faster ("feet off the table") or slower ("summer, palms, sunshine"). The broken file of the radio jingles radio play (CD 2, song 17) was also criticized. The jingle is inaudible due to massive noise. The song Ekelpack is two identical versions in the box, although the two regular releases of the song differ at the end. In the song Because of You (CD 3, song 8) one can hear a lot of noise at 02:39.

Errors have also been made when dating the demos: Give me nothing is dated 1983, but was not written until 1984. The Helgoland demo is dated 1985, but in an interview with Farin Urlaub he mentioned that the first version of the song was inspired by the film Salvador . In West Germany, however, this did not appear until June 1987. In the mediabooks, the credits for the individual songs were sometimes assigned to the wrong composer, in particular, the credits for the same songs are sometimes different.

Errors have also been made in naming the titles: Mysteryland (CD 5, song 8) and Radio brennt (CD 5, song 11) have the addition of album or single version , in fact each is a remix from Ist das Everything? 13 highlights with the doctors .

Having become aware of the fans' reaction, the Trocadero Records label responded with a statement by pointing out that master tapes had been destroyed or could not be found.

Andre Boße from the Berliner Zeitung thinks the differences in sound quality between the fun recordings as Die Ulkigen Pulkingen and the late studio productions are enormous and the work can be heard through as a whole . Laut.de thinks that Seitenhirsch is a retrospective for the fan who has also aged .
