Soilent Grün was a Berlin punk band that existed from 1980 to 1982. The band name was borrowed from the film Year 2022 ... who want to survive , in which the original title "Soylent Green" describes a food made from human body parts.

history

Bela B , who later became the Die-Ärzte drummer, and from 1981 the later Die-Ärzte guitarist Farin Urlaub belonged to the band . Farin Urlaub joined the band after Kai-Uwe Schmidt, the band's original guitarist, had his guitar stolen by hooligans during a raid on Club KZ 36 . Bernd van Huizen was primarily the singer of the band (he also played with Bela in Jörg Buttgereit's Super 8 short film Captain Berlin and is now a filmmaker). He was later replaced by Roman Stoyloff (whose ex-girlfriend is dedicated to the Die-Ärzte song Ekelpack ). The later Grimme Prize winner Hussi Kutlucan was also involved . In addition to his own film projects, he is also active as an actor and was seen, for example, in a Munich crime scene and in Die Putzfraueninsel with Jasmin Tabatabai .

The first demo recordings were made in their practice room in 1981 and published in very small editions on a compilation cassette called “Wald und Wiesen Sampler”. The band performed in small punk locations in West Berlin. Their appearance at an open-air festival in the open-air stage at the Juliusturm - near the Spandau Citadel - on September 26, 1981 was recorded with the band's permission and was actually supposed to be released as a C45 audio cassette on Graf Haufen Tapes . Only a few copies have been made because the band vetoed it (because they didn't hear enough of the audience). In early 1982 the band released their only official record on the Screen label with Die Fleisch EP . On May 1st, 1982 Soilent Grün's farewell concert took place in SO36 in Berlin at the “Tanz in den Mai” festival. A then new band played there, Die Toten Hosen , which emerged from the band ZK .

After the band broke up, a limited edition of only 50 handmade copies was released, a 70-minute cassette with the complete live concert from September 26, 1981, the pieces from the forest and meadow sampler and a piece from their farewell concert. The live concert on September 26, 1981 can also be found on the Die-Doctors bootleg CD “Unter Anderen Namen”.

Bela B and Farin Urlaub then founded Die Ärzte. Soilent Grün is therefore often referred to as its predecessor.

In 2005 the North German record label Evil Killing Records released a pre-release version of the Soilent Green tribute album in green vinyl, and at the end of 2007 a CD version with more bands and new songs, bonus material and liner notes was released .
