Almdudler is an Austrian lemonade with herbal extracts.

history

A mixture of wine and "Kracherl" (lemonade) used to be called Almdudler. According to the company, the name Almdudler is derived from the phrase "dudeln on the Alm" (the dudler is the Viennese form of yodelling ). The inventor Erwin Klein (1924–1983) is said to have given his wife Ingrid Klein (1935–2017) the first bottle of Almdudler on their wedding day in 1957. This is considered the day the company was founded, in which his wife was also half involved.

In October 1957, Erwin Klein started making a herbal lemonade at Weißgasse 3 in Vienna's 17th district. He had worked on the recipe for three years. In the 1960s, Klein's company was based in Palais Grassalkovics in Vienna's 2nd district, until it sold this historic building to the City of Vienna in 1975.

As a result, Klein granted 350 other bottlers the right to produce Almdudler in return for payment of license fees, outsourced sales to sales partners via gastronomy and trade and concentrated on marketing and advertising.

The Almdudler Limonade A. & S. Klein GmbH & Co KG is a franchisor of Almdudler lemonade . Until 1973, the company had its own production of soda water and lemonades, and since 1973 the company has only acted as a licensor. In addition to bottlers in Austria, there are also bottlers in Germany, Belgium and Switzerland.

After the sudden death of Erwin Klein in 1983, his son Thomas Klein (* 1963) took over management of the company. In 2004 Klein retired from the management and has been chairman of the supervisory board ever since. In 2004, he transferred the management of Almdudler-Limonade A. & S. Klein GmbH & Co KG to Gerhard Schilling.

The Austrian family business Pfanner and the mineral water company Franken Brunnen have been distribution partners in Germany since 2016, and Stardrinks AG (a subsidiary of Heineken Switzerland AG) in Switzerland.

The family company is no longer bottling it itself, but is awarded to Vöslauer / Ottakringer , where the soft drink comes off the line together with Pepsi-Cola and 7 Up , and Egger ( Spezi ).

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the brand in 2017, the American artist Mel Ramos created a painting with the name "Almdudler's Fabulous Blonde".

Use as a mixture

Almdudler is drunk pure (red label) as well as mixed with various other drinks:

  • Mixed with beer , it is known as Almradler or Radler and is now also available in Austria as a ready-to-use mixed drink.
  • Mixtures with red wine or white wine are called Almdudler Rot or Almdudler White , Sweet Spritzter , Sweet Mixture , Almspritzer , Liftler, Kaiser Mixture (red or white, depending on the wine) or Tyrolean .
  • A mixture of roughly equal parts Almdudler and carbonated water is also popular during the summer months. As “Almdudler g'spritzt” it was later brought onto the market as a finished drink (yellow label).

In addition to the above, there is also a sugar-free (blue label) and a non-carbonated version ("Still"). Almdudler consists of water, sugar, natural flavors (herbal extracts), the acidifier citric acid , carbonic acid and the coloring agent caramel . The calorific value of 100 ml Almdudler is 141  kJ or 33  kcal .

numbers

Today 99 percent (source: Spectra market research 2005) of all Austrians know the herbal lemonade. Almdudler was ranked 7th in Austria's largest brand study. The so-called Brand Asset Valuator by the Young & Rubicam agency measures brand value from the consumer's point of view , and the 2000 respondents chose Almdudler as the only Austrian beverage brand among the top 10.

Over 80 million liters of Almdudler are produced every year; 14 percent (as of 2010) and 20 percent (as of 2014) of total sales are bottled and sold in foreign markets.
