Laura Ann Waller (born February 14, 1979 in Kingston, Ontario ) is a computer scientist and Ted van Duzer Endowed Professor at the University of California at Berkeley . In 2017 she received a research grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to develop microscopes for the observation of deep brain structures, and in 2018 she won the SPIE's Early Career Award (award for early careers) .

Education

Waller is from Kingston, Ontario, Canada . She studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she completed her bachelor's degrees in electronic engineering and computer science in 2004 and her master's degree in 2005. During her undergraduate studies, she spent a year at Cambridge University as part of her work at the Cambridge-MIT Institute. In her master’s thesis, she dealt with the design of feedback loops and experimental test procedures for systems of integrated optics . In 2010 she completed her doctoral thesis under doctoral supervisor George Barbastathis , in which she developed and investigated new techniques for mapping phases and amplitudes. She was a student at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). She played soccer in the MIT women's selection and was president of the Optical Society student body .

Research and career

Waller works in the field of computer-aided imaging procedures. In 2010 she went to Princeton University to work as a research assistant and lecturer. In 2012, she joined the University of California at Berkeley . Her research group focuses on phase imaging, high-resolution microscopy and lensless imaging methods. She is a Senior Fellow at the Berkeley Institute for Data Science.

Waller was named a fellow of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation in 2014. In the same year, she was appointed investigator for data-driven discovery by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation . As she holds the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, her research group can develop experimental software for 4D imaging of partially spatially coherent light. She has developed machine learning techniques for 3D microscopy. In 2016, she got a permanent position at the University of California at Berkeley . In 2017 she received an Investigator Award from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Waller received the SPIE Early Career Achievement Award in Academia in January 2018. By developing computer-assisted imaging equipment, Waller has made important contributions in both biomedical and industrial applications. Her research group develops open source imaging applications. According to MIT's EECS , Laura Waller is one of the Rising Stars of 2018.
