Geschwisterliebe is a song by the Berlin punk rock band Die Ärzte , written and composed by Farin Urlaub . The text of the song, published in 1986, describes, among other things, sexual intercourse between a brother and his 14-year-old sister. In early 1987, the accompanying album Die Ärzte was indexed on the basis of the song. The Federal Inspectorate for Writings Harmful to Young People stated in its reasoning that the “incestuous relationship” indicated in the song was “glorified and propagated”. Furthermore, the song is suitable for “disorienting young people in terms of sexual ethics”.
This means that the song may not be performed or advertised publicly in Germany, or made accessible to young people under the age of 18.

music
In Geschwisterliebe only five guitar chords (A minor, G major, F major, E major and D minor) are played in 6/8 time. The song comprises three stanzas, the chorus, which consists of the repetitive line “ That satisfies my instincts, sibling love, sibling love ”, is only played at the very end. The second verse is followed by a short guitar solo ; the verse that follows begins very softly. The stanzas all end on the word “ lay flat ”, but also in conjugated form.
production
Sibling love has been an integral part of the band's live program for a long time. The doctors initially had reservations about publishing the song because they thought it was going too far. An employee of the record company CBS said, however, that the borderline song Claudia hat 'nen Schäferhund was not objected to by the Federal Testing Office for writings harmful to minors (which later changed), and encouraged the doctors to also publish Sibling Love. The recordings did not take place in the recording studio in which Die Ärzte were working on their album Die Ärzte , but in a neighboring hall under live conditions. Doctors' bassist Sahnie does not play on the recording because the band broke up with him before the recording began. As with all the other songs on the album Die Ärzte , bass was played by producer Manfred Praeker .
indexing
Geschwisterliebe initially only appeared in abbreviated form on a so-called Flexi-Disk, which was enclosed with the magazine Musikexpress / Sounds . The song was released in full length in 1986 on the album Die Ärzte .
On December 18, 1986, the Essen Youth Welfare Office applied for the indexing of the album The Doctors to the Federal Testing Office for writings harmful to minors after a mother from Witten complained about the song Geschwisterliebe . The federal inspection agency for writings harmful to minors dealt with the album and indexed it on January 27, 1987 based on the song Geschwisterliebe . The reason given was that the title "is suitable for sex-ethically disorienting young people". An incestuous relationship is "glorified, played down and propagated and emphasized and memorably underlined by the catchy melody".
The indexing of the album meant that it could no longer be sold to anyone under the age of 18 and could no longer be publicly promoted; H. in particular that the album may not be freely accessible in retail stores and may only be sold to people over the age of 18 upon direct request. The ban on public applications also included a performance ban on the song Geschwisterliebe . As a result, Die Ärzte were no longer allowed to play the title at their concerts in Germany. In case of violations, Die Ärzte would make themselves liable to prosecution.
The federal inspection agency for writings harmful to minors checked the compliance with the indexing with unusual rigor. After minors managed to acquire the indexed album without any problems, criminal proceedings were initiated against various record dealers. This rigid approach unsettled record dealers. The Karstadt chain even removed all of the band's recordings from its offer.
The concert organizers were also unsettled by the indexing and canceled concerts on the band's upcoming tour. At a concert z. B. Admission is only permitted from the age of 18.
Confronted with the fact that two of the three previously released albums were not freely available (in the course of the increased attention around the band, the debut album Debil and two of the songs on it also came into focus), the doctors tried to index it as To use means of advertising. When a best-of album ( Is that all? ) Was released about a year after the release of the album Die Ärzte , the band decided to release an additional mini-album in 10 ″ format, on which all of the band's indexed songs were included are heard in order to force a new indexing. In order to forestall the indexing, they titled this little album from the start with 18+ . Just a few days after the release of this album, it was also indexed. Another month later, the text supplement to the album was indexed separately.
During the fall 1987 tour, the doctors performed live as part of a television production for the program Live from Alabama . The ban on sibling love caused Bela B. to make the following announcement:
- “If you sing this song, you make yourself liable to prosecution, and we don't want that, no. You still have your youth ahead of you, you are so young. Do an apprenticeship as a banker or become a drug addict, but don't sing this song. (...) With your sacred promise that you will not sing the song, we will play it now. "
The doctors played the song instrumentally after this announcement, and the audience sang the lyrics loudly. Since this appearance could be seen live on television, complaints from viewers followed, which were due, among other things, to the fact that allusions to the politician Uwe Barschel, who had been found dead the day before, found their way into the announcements during the live part of the concert also the ironic claim that Barschel was killed because he sang that very song.
After this media-effective appearance, the band's concerts were the target of women's organizations , youth welfare offices , the tabloid press and police authorities . During a performance in Regensburg , where they repeatedly and explicitly asked the audience not to sing sibling love , the doctors were sentenced to a total of 1,500 DM (500 DM per band member) because the court did not see the seriousness of the request. As a basis of assessment for the amount of the fine, the monthly income of the band was estimated by the court at 1,500 DM. Against their better judgment, the band did not contradict this estimate.
In 2004, the indexing of the songs Lullaby , Claudia has' nen Shepherd Dog and Sibling Love were checked again by the Federal Testing Office for writings harmful to young people. Only the indexing of sibling love was maintained.
