Claira ( Occitan : Clairà ) is a town in the south of France and a municipality with 4,181 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in the Occitania region .

Location and climate

Claira is located on the Agly River near the Mediterranean coast , about 13 km (driving distance) northeast of Perpignan in the historic landscape of Roussillon at a height of about 10  m . The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 585 mm / year) falls - with the exception of the summer months - over the year.

history

The Roman road Via Domitia runs through the municipality . A first village is mentioned in 928 near the church of Saint-Jaume de Predacalç . In the Middle Ages, Roussillon, and with it Claira, was disputed between the Kingdom of France and the Kingdom of Aragón ; from 1276 to 1344 it belonged to the Kingdom of Mallorca . Later it came - with interruptions - to Spain ; in the Peace of the Pyrenees (1659) it was finally annexed to the French crown.

  • An Église Saint-Vincent is mentioned as early as 1091; the current building dates from the 14th century and is mainly made of rubble stone; the crenellated bell tower (clocher) is made of bricks . In the 18th and 19th centuries, the interior of the church was modified.
