The Côtes du Roussillon wine-growing region extends over large parts of the Pyrénées-Orientales department around the city of Perpignan , making it by far the largest appellation in the Roussillon wine-growing region . The vineyards cover 5,537 hectares in 125 communities. The area has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short) since March 28, 1977 . In the south, the area borders on the Collioure appellation . In the north there is the higher-classified appellation Côtes du Roussillon-Villages with 25 municipalities. Four municipalities are allowed to write their names on the label in the form of Côtes du Roussillon Villages Caramany, Côtes du Roussillon Villages Latour de France, Côtes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde, Côtes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel and thus enjoy a special status.

In general, a harvest restriction of 50 hectoliters / hectare is prescribed.

red wine

Red wines must be blended from at least three grape varieties , including two main types. The main varieties are Carignan (since 1993 its share has been a maximum of 60%), Grenache , Lledoner Pelut and Cinsault . Syrah , Mourvèdre and the white grape variety Macabeo (max. 10%) are considered secondary varieties . The combined share of the Syrah and Mourvèdre varieties is at least 20%.

The spectrum of wines produced is very broad and ranges from freshly matured fruity wines that must be drunk young to high-quality top wines that are matured in barriques .

The minimum alcohol content is 11.5% by volume.

Rose wine

Rosé wines must be blended from at least three grape varieties, including two main varieties. The main varieties are Carignan (since 1993 its share has been a maximum of 60%), Grenache, Llledoner Pelut and Cinsault. Syrah, Mourvèdre and the white grape variety Macabeo (max. 30%) are considered secondary varieties. The combined share of the Syrah and Mourvèdre varieties is at least 20%.

The rosé wines are made using the Saignée process.

The minimum alcohol content is 11.5% by volume.

White wine

The white wine is blended from Grenache Blanc , Macabeo, Torbato (called Malvoisie de Roussillon or Tourbat Blanc here), Marsanne blanche , Roussanne and Vermentino (called Rolle here).

The combined share of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Vermentino must not exceed 50%.

The white wines are usually characterized by the fruit of the Macabeo, the structure of the Grenache Blanc and occasionally by the finesse and acidity of the Tourbat Blanc.

The minimum alcohol content is 10.5% by volume.
