The N175 was established in 1824 as the French national road between Granville and Caen. This goes back to the route imperiale 195. Their length was 107.5 kilometers. In 1839 it was shortened as the newly established N24 BIS took over the section between Granville and Villedieu-les-Poêles. As a result, their length was only 79.5 kilometers. In 1973 it was extended in both directions and ran between Rennes and the N138 southwest of Rouen. It took over various sections of other national roads in the following order:

In 1992 the route in the Ille-et-Vilaine department was completely stepped down. With the commissioning of the A84 from 1998, the parallel sections of the N175 were simultaneously staggered. In 2006, the graduation took place parallel to the A13, so that today the N175 only runs as a connection for the A84 between Avranches and Pontaubault, and as an expressway between Pontaubault and Pontorson, where it continues as the N176.
