The N171 is a French national road that was established between Granville and Carentan in 1824. It goes back to the route impériale 191. Their length was 64 kilometers. In 1973 this leadership was downgraded. In 1978, sections of 3 national roads were formed into a new N171 between Laval and Le Croisic:

In 2006, the sections between Laval and the N137 at Nozay, as well as Saint-Nazaire and Le Croisic were graduated.
