features

The moths reach a wingspan of 7 to 9 millimeters. The head shines dark brown and has a grayish bronze-colored forehead ( frons ). The antennae are dark brown, the last third is yellowish white. The thorax and tegulae are dark brown with a slightly purple sheen. The back of the thorax is white. The forewings are dark brown and have a slight purple sheen. The drawing of the forewings includes two white bands. The first is the widest and is near the base. It tapers towards the Costa loader and has a gray-brown border, especially on the inside. The second band is in front of the middle of the wing. It tapers at both ends and does not extend to the inner edge of the wing. At 3/4 of the forewing length there is a small white costal spot, a smaller spot is opposite on the inner wing edge. The fringed scales are dark brown at the apex and gray-brown towards the inner edge of the wing. The hind wings are gray-brown in the males and light gray in the females. The abdomen of the males is brownish gray and has a whitish anus tuft . In the females the abdomen is dorsally gray and yellowish white, the seventh segment is gray ventrally . In some specimens, the inner band may be completely darkened to gray-brown. The second bandage and subapical spots are occasionally reduced.

In the male, the tegumen is triangular. The blades are strongly asymmetrical and bilobed. The right valve is quite compact, the dorsal lobe is broadly spatulate and has a cusp in the middle of the anterior margin. The ventral lobe is only half as long as the dorsal. Both lobes have a distal spot with short, coarse bristles. The left valve is longer and slim. The dorsal lobe is long and narrow. It widens distally and is provided with rows of short needles that run from the base to the apex. The ventral lobe is only half as long as the dorsal. It is slender, slightly curved and has a distal patch of coarse bristles. The aedeagus is strongly curved in the last third. It tapers to a point and has a few sclerotized ligaments.

In the female, the genital plate is heavily sclerotized and curved. The ductus bursae is fairly wide and has a narrow zigzag-shaped inner band. The corpus bursae is elongated and has a rectangular, strongly serrated sign.

distribution

Gisilia stereodoxa is found in southern Europe (Mediterranean coast), Sardinia , Malta , Egypt , Iran and India . The species has also been found in Kenya and Namibia .
