The N172 was established in 1824 as the French national road between Bayeux and Coutances. It goes back to the route impériale 192. Their length was 63 kilometers. In 1973, the N172 was downgraded to the southeast bypass of Saint-Lô, on which it was now placed. Since 2006 this piece has also been a departmental road.
