The N156 was a French national road established between Blois and Châteauroux in 1824. It goes back to the route impériale 176. Its total length was 96 kilometers. 1973 was the complete gradation. In 1978 a piece of the N104 in the urban area of Ales was built as a connection between the N104 and N106, and a new N156. This was downgraded in 1981. Once again, the number was used for the road between the end of the N157 at Rocade de Rennes and downtown Rennes, which came from the N157. This has been a municipal road since 2006.
