Origin and naming
Selles owes its existence to St. Eusicius, who lived here as a hermit and later founded an abbey . Accordingly, the name of the city is derived from the Latin " cella " (monk's cell). “Cella Eusicii” finally became “Selles-sur-Cher” in the 19th century.
Historic buildings
Of the important abbey from the Middle Ages, only the church of Notre-Dame-la-Blanche, Abbatiale Saint-Eusice, which was restored in the 17th and 19th centuries, remains. In the crypt is the sarcophagus of St. Eusicius from the 6th century. The completely Romanesque facade of the building has columns and capitals that come from a church that was destroyed by the Normans in 903.
Selles Castle is also steeped in history, dating back to a fortress on the Cher razed by Richard the Lionheart , which was rebuilt around 1212. At the beginning of the 17th century it had to give way to a new castle, the main part of which was destroyed in 1787 and which was finally completely devastated in 1813. All that remains are the rectangular defensive wall , the moat and its bridges and two Renaissance pavilions.
PDO goat cheese Selles-sur-Cher
The French associate “Selles-sur-Cher” not only with the city on the Cher, but also with a goat cheese that originated here in the 19th century. Since 1975, this type of cheese has had the AOP ( Appellation d'Origine Protegée ) seal of approval , which ensures its controlled origin and production method. The cheese gets its striking blue-gray rind from dusting it with ash and salt.
