The Selles castle is located in the French commune of Selles-sur-Cher in Loir-et-Cher of the Region Center-Val de Loire . The buildings still preserved the plant are under since 1926 listed .

history

In 1212 Robert de Courtenay rebuilt the fortifications originally built in 1142 by Ginon de Mehun and razed by Richard the Lionheart . In the 15th century, the fortress belonged to the La Trémoille house . In 1604, Philippe de Béthune, Sully's brother , bought the land and built a new castle within an enclosure delimited by moats , which betrayed Parisian and royal influence. In 1787 the main part of the complex was destroyed, and in 1813 the entire castle was completely devastated by post-revolutionary speculative activity ( Bande noire ).

King Charles VII stayed in the castle several times; In 1424 he gathered the Estates General here and held a council meeting in 1429 before the liberation of Orléans . Louis XI. came in 1471 to the castle on the Cher, Ludwig XII. in 1509. The Queen of Poland, Maria Kazimiera Sobieska , stayed here in 1696.

architecture

Only the preserved rectangular defensive wall is evidence of the Selles palace complex . The moat and the bridges that cross it also still exist. To the east are two bright Renaissance buildings from the 17th century, reminiscent of the style of the Place des Vosges in Paris. The two buildings are connected to each other by a long walk-through arcade wall with round windows, which has a triumphal arch portal in the middle. The Béthune pavilion to the right of the entrance once joined the now-disappeared residential wing, which stretched over 34 meters along the river. In it is the bedroom of the Polish queen. There is also a beautiful arms room there. The entire complex is made of brick and tufa .

The castle could not be visited for a long time in May 2009.
