It belongs to the arrondissement Romorantin-Lanthenay and the canton Selles-sur-Cher (until 2015: canton Mennetou-sur-Cher ). The inhabitants are called Castrais .

Châtres-sur-Cher is about twelve kilometers west-northwest of Vierzon am Cher . Châtres-sur-Cher is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Selles-Saint-Denis in the north and north-west, La Ferté-Imbault in the north and north-east, Theillay in the east, Thénioux in the south, Maray in the south-west, Mennetou-sur-Cher in the west and Langon -sur-cher to the west and northwest.
The A85 autoroute and the former Route nationale 76 run through the municipality .
