history
On the morning of June 8, 1944, during World War II , the 506th Paratrooper Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division tried to cut off the retreat of the German columns and attacked Saint-Côme-du-Mont. A German paratrooper regiment put up bitter resistance. The German troops blew up the bridges that led across the Douve and left the place. In the afternoon around 4 o'clock the American troops were able to take the place.
With effect from January 1, 2016, the former municipalities of Angoville-au-Plain , Carentan , Houesville and Saint-Côme-du-Mont were merged to form the Commune nouvelle Carentan-les-Marais. The municipality of Saint-Côme-du-Mont belonged to the Arrondissement of Saint-Lô and the canton of Carentan .
Attractions
The so-called Dead Man's Corner Museum is a reminder of the heavy fighting at the crossroads in Saint-Côme-du-Mont, where many soldiers died, and shows authentic paratrooper equipment.
The Manoir de Rampan is a 16th century mansion . The stables date from the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1995 the house was partially registered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques (historical monuments).
The Romanesque church of Saint-Côme-et-Saint-Damien was restored after 1944 and, together with the cemetery surrounding it, has been classified as a monument historique since 1946. There are three objects in the church that have been classified as a monument historique: a chalice veil from the 18th century, a bas-relief from the 12th century depicting a fox and a stork, and an octagonal baptismal font that also refers to the Dated 12th century.
