Moncoutant is a commune Déléguée in the French community moncoutant-sur-Sevre in the department of Deux-Sèvres in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It has 3166 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

The inhabitants of Moncoutant are called Moncoutantais . The name Moncoutant is derived from mons Constantinus (Mount Constantine), in honor of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great .

geography

Moncoutant is located on the Sèvre Nantaise in the north of the Deux-Sèvres department, 50 kilometers north of Niort and 15 kilometers west of Bressuire . The Commune déléguée is located in a bocage area, that is, a landscape that is characterized by high hedges that are thousands of years old as the boundary of the field.

history

The settlement of the region around Moncoutant has been proven since the Neolithic .

During the Reformation , many residents converted to Protestantism . A strong Protestant community still exists in the city today.

An important textile industry developed in Moncoutant from the 18th to the end of the 19th century . Mills were built on the banks of the Sèvre Nantaise to wash the wool. The mills were later used to grind grain.

At the turn of the 20th century Moncoutant received a railway connection on the Bressuire-Niort line. However, this connection no longer exists today.

During the Second World War , a resistance group existed in the city. Five residents of the village died in the resistance.

On January 1, 2019, the municipality of Moncoutant merged with La Chapelle-Saint-Étienne , Le Breuil-Bernard , Moutiers-sous-Chantemerle , Pugny and Saint-Jouin-de-Milly to form the Commune nouvelle Moncoutant-sur-Sèvre. Since then it has had the status of a Commune déléguée.

Attractions

The town's church was restored from 1865 to 1867. It shows elements of the Romanesque and Gothic .

economy

Moncoutant is predominantly characterized by agriculture, but some industrial companies are also located in the city center. With the opening of the Pescalis recreation area in 2001, the municipality was also opened up for tourism.
