history

Until the 20th century

In 1124, Bishop Otto von Bamberg consecrated the church "Vohendreze" in what is now Altenstadt. During this time Vohenstrauss belonged with the raft and park stone to the powerful family of the Counts of Sulzbach . After the Sulzbachers died out in 1189, the Hohenstaufen acquired their own property and probably founded the new market at the beginning of the 13th century, because in 1230 Altenstadt was already known as "veteri (old) vohendrezz". After the Landshut War of Succession (1503/05) Vohenstrauss was assigned to the Duchy of Palatinate-Neuburg . Under Friedrich von Pfalz-Vohenstrauß-Parkstein , Vohenstrauss became a residential city for a short time. From 1586 to 1593 Friedrich had Friedrichsburg Castle built near Vohenstrauss. After the division of the country in 1614, the market came to Pfalz-Sulzbach , and in 1777 to Bavaria. Between 1378 and 1770 the market was repeatedly referred to as a city, and in 1912 Prince Regent Luitpold finally gave the market the name of a city.

Incorporations

After the end of World War II, the US military government incorporated the two communities Altenstadt bei Vohenstrauß and Oberlind into the city of Vohenstrauss on January 1, 1946 . On December 26, 1947, the two former municipalities voted in a vote to regain their political independence.

As part of the municipal reform in Bavaria, the municipalities of Altenstadt bei Vohenstrauß , Böhmischbruck , Döllnitz , Kaimling , Oberlind , Roggenstein and Waldau were initially incorporated into the Vohenstrauß registry office district on January 1, 1968 . With effect from January 1, 1972, the political incorporation of Kaimling, Oberlind (with Obernankau incorporated in 1938), Roggenstein (with Lämersdorf incorporated in 1938) and Waldau took place, and on July 1, 1972 the municipalities of Altenstadt and Böhmischbruck. On July 1, 1976, the Döllnitz community was again separated from the registry office district.

With the incorporation of the six neighboring municipalities, the area of the urban area increased fourfold. The number of inhabitants doubled. Vohenstrauss has had 48 officially named parts of the municipality since the end of the municipal reform and is the largest city in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district in terms of population.

On August 1, 2013, the urban area increased by around 77 hectares in the course of the incorporation of part of the previously unincorporated Michlbach area , after its dissolution by ordinance of the government of the Upper Palatinate of June 19, 2013.
