Kaltenbaum
Cold tree

Kaltenbaum is a wasteland in the northern Upper Palatinate and a district of the city of Vohenstrauss .

Geographical location

The hamlet is located in the Upper Palatinate Forest , about 4 km southwest of Vohenstrauss on the A6 motorway . The Kaltenbaumbach rises to the south of Kaltenbaum and flows into the Pfreimd about 1.4 km southeast of the town.

history

Kaltenbaum is located on the former Goldene Straße trading route .

The cold tree was mentioned as a border tree as early as the 16th century . It marked the border between the Principality of Upper Palatinate and the Leuchtenberg landscape . The Electoral Palatinate side had it illegally turned over in 1596. After it was replanted in 1606, it withered at the beginning of the Thirty Years War . In 1642 the winter linden tree still standing today (2017) was planted again.

Kaltenbaum belonged to the Oberlind tax district formed in 1808 . In addition to Oberlind itself, this included Unterlind, Arnmühle, Kaltenbaum and Tradmühle.

From 1821 to 1830 Kaltenbaum belonged together with Oberlind, Unterlind and Tradmühle to the rural community of Oberlind. In 1838 the independent rural community Obernankau was merged with Oberlind. With the municipality reform in 1972, Kaltenbaum came to the municipality of Vohenstrauß.

Myths and legends

There are numerous sagas and legends about the Cold Tree, all of which tell of acts of violence. The stone cross at the foot of the Cold Tree also indicates an act of violence that was committed here.

A legend reports that 1000 years ago a bearded carter came by on a two-wheeled cart. The cart was pulled by seven large billy goats. The carter wore a twig on the brim of his hat, which he thrust into the ground and from which the cold tree grew.

According to another legend, the Cold Tree was planted by a seer. This prophesied: If the smallest branch of the tree can carry a rider with armor and horse, armies from East and West will come. These armies will fight a great battle. So much blood will flow that it powers the Lindlmühle. The corpses of people and horses will lie in heaps as far as the eye can see. This is followed by a time of peace.

Another legend tells that a Countess von Leuchtenberg murdered and buried her two children here. As a punishment, the Count von Sulzberg thrust his sword through her breast and buried her there. As he did so, a seed he had brought from the Holy Land fell from his pocket into the cold heart of the countess. From this grew the Cold Tree. The icy wind that rages in its branches is the spirit of the countess who finds no rest in the grave.
