Waldau is a church village and a district of Vohenstrauß in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab in the Upper Palatinate with about 600 inhabitants.

The village lies in the open, about 3 km northwest of Vohenstrauss next to the state road St 2166 .

history

Waldau Castle , which dates back to the 13th century, is located in Waldau . Builder and first owner of the hilltop castle was the Ministerialengeschlecht the Waldauer that the Burg Schellenberg built. After the Waldau family died out in 1545, the Wirsbergers acquired the facility. In the following centuries the castle had different owners. The New Palace was built in the second half of the 17th century after parts of the castle had become dilapidated. In the 18th century the keep and adjacent buildings were converted into a local church. The Johannes von Nepomuk Church was built in 1912, and the castle has not been used as a church since then.

With the formation of the tax districts in 1808, Waldau became a tax district. This included the villages of Erpetshof, Trasgschieß, Waldau and Zeßmannsrieth and the desert cover works, Iltismühle, Neumühle and Zieglmühle.

In 1809 the Waldau dominion formed a patrimonial court . Their owners were the Freiherrn von Lilien. It had 130 people behind it and comprised a mixed district with the towns of Altenstadt , Arnmühle , Braunetsrieth , Erpetshof , Iltismühle , Kößlmühle , Matzlesrieth , Neumühle , Obernankau , Trasgschieß , Trauschendorf , Zeßmannsrieth , Zieglmühle and Waldau.

For indirect patrimonialgerichtischen Rural Municipality Waldau were 1,821 villages Waldau 59 families Erpetshof with nine families and Zeßmannsrieth with 13 families, the hamlet Trasgschieß with five families who deserts Arnmühle with a family Iltis mill with three families Neumühle with three families and Zieglmühle with 5 families.

On January 1, 1968 , Waldau became part of the Vohenstrauss registry office district.

Until the municipal reform , Waldau was an independent municipality in the Vohenstrauß district with the districts Erpetshof, Iltismühle, Neumühle, Trasgschieß, Zeßmannsrieth and Zieglmühle. On January 1, 1972, it was incorporated into the then district town of Vohenstrauß.

Infrastructure

Waldau has three beverage markets and a garden tavern. The village has good transport links. It takes about four minutes by bus to Vohenstrauss. The bus to the next larger city, Weiden, takes around 15 to 20 minutes. The Waldau (Oberpf) stop on the former Neustadt (Waldnaab) –Eslarn railway line has been closed.

There is a sports club, horse lovers, volunteer fire brigade, men's club, women's association and rural youth in the village.
