history

The ending -rieth in the place name Zeßmannsrieth indicates that Zeßmannsrieth is one of the German clearing settlements that emerged on the Luhe in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries .

Zeßmannsrieth (also Cesemsrevt, Zesambreut ) was mentioned in writing in 1283 when Landgrave Friedrich II von Leuchtenberg left a farm in Zeßmannsrieth to Wolfhard von Edeldorf (Ettelndorf).

In the 14th century, the place belonged to the rule of the Waldauer . The Landgrave Ulrich II. And Johann I acquired in 1352 a farm in Zeßmannsrieth. In 1366 the two shared their property. Ulrich II received the Leuchtenberg fortress and all possessions west of the road from Vohenstrauss to Weiden , Johann I received the Pleystein fortress and all possessions east of the road from Vohenstrauss to Weiden. A court in Zeßmannsrieth fell to Johann I and the rule of Pleystein. Zeßmannsrieth was named in 1483 when Ulrich von Waldau handed over part of his possessions to his sons.

In the middle of the 16th century the rule of the Waldauer - and with it Zeßmannsrieth - passed to the Wirsbergers. In 1632 it came into the possession of the Lords of Enkefort. From the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 19th century, the Barons von Rumel held the fiefdom.

In the 18th century Zeßmannsrieth belonged to the municipality of Waldau , district of Vohenstrauß, with 11 properties and a shepherd's house . Two properties were fiefdoms from Waldthurn and belonged to the manor and the Leuchtenberg lower court. Zeßmannsrieth belonged to the Vohenstrauss parish, Altenstadt branch.

With the formation of the tax districts in 1808, Waldau became a tax district. This included the villages of Erpetshof , Trasgschieß , Waldau and Zeßmannsrieth and the desert cover works, Iltismühle , Neumühle and Zieglmühle .

In 1809 Zeßmannsrieth belonged to the Waldau domain. This formed a patrimonial court in 1809 . Their owners were the Freiherrn von Lilien. It had 130 people behind it and comprised a mixed district with the towns of Altenstadt, Arnmühle, Braunetsrieth, Erpetshof, Iltismühle, Kößlmühle, Matzlesrieth, Neumühle, Obernankau, Trasgschieß, Trauschendorf, Zeßmannsrieth, Zieglmühle and Waldau.

In 1821 Zeßmannsrieth belonged to the indirect patrimonial rural community of Waldau. This included the villages of Waldau with 59 families, Erpetshof with 9 families and Zeßmannsrieth with 13 families, the hamlet of Trasgschieß with 5 families, the desert Arnmühle with one family, Iltismühle with 3 families, Neumühle with 3 families and Zieglmühle with 5 families.

When the municipality of Waldau was incorporated into the municipality of Vohenstrauß on January 1, 1972 as part of the municipal reform, Zeßmannsrieth became part of Vohenstrauß.

St. Barbara village chapel

Zeßmannsrieth belongs to the parish of Roggenstein. Since 1984 it has had a new wooden chapel. Vohenstrauss had committed himself through the integration contract to build a new chapel in place of the old one. This was canceled in March 1983 and the new building began. On Easter Monday of the following year, on April 23, 1984, the cathedral capitulate Fran z Spießl and pastor Gerhard Schmidt were able to inaugurate the new chapel. It was consecrated in honor of Saint Barbara .

Inside the chapel hangs a large crucifix with the crucified Christ and the mother of Jesus . Next to it is a statue of the chapel patroness. Some of the figures come from the demolished chapel. The roof turret is also the bell tower . On the bell from 1948, also from the old chapel, there is a cast image of Mary.
