The ruins of Leuchtenberg in Leuchtenberg are the largest and best preserved castle ruins in the Upper Palatinate . The Höhenburg stands on the summit of the 585 meter high Leuchtenberg and is one of the most famous viewpoints in the region.
history
The castle was built by the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg , an influential medieval noble family, in the style of medieval knight fortresses around 1300. Presumably there was a fortification on the mountain before that. However, the landgraves left the castle in 1322 to reside in nearby Pfreimd . The noble family perished in 1646. After the death of the last landgrave, the castle fell into disrepair, and in 1842 it was completely destroyed in a major fire.
In the 20th century, work began on securing the existing structure and rebuilding parts of the castle. Today the castle ruin is used as an open-air stage and is the venue for the annual Leuchtenberg Castle Festival .
Keep
The rectangular from hump blocks brick keep m has a height of 24 m and a wall thickness of 2.5. It is used as a lookout tower.
