The abandoned Oberbibrach Castle is now just a medieval stables west of the Church of St. Johannes Evangelist in the Oberbibrach district of the Vorbach community in the Upper Palatinate district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab in Bavaria . The street name "Schlossgraben" in Oberbibrach still refers to the castle that no longer exists.

history

Little historical and archaeological information is known about this low castle of the type of a tower hill castle (Motte), it is dated as medieval and it is regarded as the seat of the lords of Bibra (ch) . In 1119 a Rupertus de Bibra is mentioned for the first time as a witness in the deed of foundation of the Michelfeld Monastery . 1130 a Heinricus de Biberahe can be found in the Ensdorfer Traditionscodex with the donation of an estate in Lindenhardt to the Wittelsbach Count Palatine Otto , one of the founders of the monastery. In 1351, Bibrach Castle is mentioned as a fiefdom of the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg . Landgraf Ulrich I have of Bibrach Heinrich , called "Poor Heiner," and his son Chunrad encumbered with half Veste to Bibrach and other lands. The lords of Bibra had their burial place in the church of Neukreisendorf, today a district of Kirchenthumbach , with a family coat of arms in the church of St. Georg there.

In the 14th and especially in the 15th century, the Speinshart monastery began buying the fief of the noble family. Under Georg Taurus von Gunzendorf , the castle building was repaired again, in 1557 the abbot Johann Georg von Gleißenthal , who had become Lutheran , tried in vain to get the castle from the elector as his residence. Because of a dispute with Eschenbach , the abbot wanted to develop Bibrach into an independent market, which was located outside the ban mile of Eschenbach.

The gentlemen von Bibrach later appear in Upper Franconia . Here a Sebastian Keller von Bibrach, called Schwab , is mentioned in 1518 as Landsasse von Guttenthau ; In 1534 a Hans Kellner von Bibrach, called Schwab , is mentioned in Guttenthau . In 1532 Georg Kellner von Bibrach was certified as the owner of the Hofmark Katzberg . Wolf Karl Kellner sells this seat to Jakob Fuchs von Arnschwang in 1567 . The Lords of Biberach took over the office of ore marshal in the Bamberg Monastery and in 1698 achieved the title of baron .

The castle was probably badly damaged in the Thirty Years War and was demolished in 1685. Remnants of the castle were used between 1761 and 1772 for the construction of St. John's Church and the church wall.

description

A round castle hill in the Biberbach valley has been preserved from the complex . The castle site is protected on three sides by a 2.5 to 3 m deep moat . The hill area measures approx. 32 m in diameter and is now used as a meadow orchard . On the north-west side, slight increases in masonry and on the south-east side the remains of an enclosure wall can be seen . In the original cadastre from 1845 there are references to a tower upstream to the north and a moat fed by the Biberbach .
