history

The Friedrichsburg was built from 1586 to 1593 by Count Palatine Friedrich . The builder was Leonhardt Greineisen from Burglengenfeld, the work was carried out by the Weiden mason Hanss Reicholt. He died in 1589, whereupon the Italian master mason Hans Meria continued the work. The builder Friedrich is also the namesake of the castle.

Count Palatine Friedrich moved with his wife Katharina-Sophia von Weiden to Vohenstrauß in 1593 to reside in Friedrichsburg. Originally Friedrich wanted to expand his residence in Weiden in a representative way, after which this failed, the decision was made in favor of Vohenstrauss. As a residence, Vohenstrauss experienced an economic upswing.

After Friedrich died on December 17, 1597, the palace served the Countess Palatine as a widow's residence until her death on May 10, 1608. The rulers' rights went to Pfalz-Neuburg .

In the following time the Friedrichsburg was used as an apartment for the keepers of Floss and Vohenstrauss. The castle was first renovated in 1659 and 1661.

Various offices used the castle in the 19th century. So was z. B. 1809 the district court of Burgtreswitz moved to the castle. Todays use

On May 24, 1989, renovation work began on the castle. It was planned that the KAB Institute's educational facility would be housed in Friedrichsburg. The outside of the Friedrichsburg was completely renovated by 2001. The opening was supposed to take place in July 1992, but the project failed due to the enormous increase in renovation costs. The Free State of Bavaria has already offered the castle for sale several times, but neither buyers nor sponsors have been found to continue the renovation work. Today, the castle is used as a venue for exhibitions, concerts and theater as part of the Leuchtenberg Castle Festival .

Since the summer season 2009, the tourist information office of the town of Vohenstrauss and the office of the tourism association Naturparkland Oberpfälzer Wald have been located on the ground floor of the castle .

The Free State of Bavaria has extensively renovated the castle for this purpose.

The city of Vohenstrauß has been the tenant of the building since February 10, 2011. For the previous tenant, an event agency from the Kelheim district, the use of the castle had turned out to be unprofitable. A city working group is to develop any possible uses.
