The castle Neuhaus is a Spur castle in the same locality Neuhaus in Neustadt an der Waldnaab in the northern Upper Palatinate . A striking feature of the castle is the free-standing so-called butter churn tower , which is reminiscent of a butter churn due to its massive substructure and narrow upper structure .
Neuhaus Castle is not a classic knight's seat, but rather a fortified hunting lodge .
history
The castle was built around 1300 by Landgrave Ulrich I von Leuchtenberg . The castle was pledged several times to the Waldsassen monastery , for the first time in 1328, until it was finally sold to the Waldsassen monastery in 1515 by Landgrave Johann IV von Leuchtenberg. In 1614 the complex was restored and used by the monastery as the seat of a monastery judge. The use of the monastery lasted until the secularization in 1803. In 1820 the Neuhaus market bought the building and used it from then on as a community administration and school building. Today the Waldnaab Valley Museum is housed in Neuhaus Castle with the “Butterfassturm”.
