The Burg Waldau is a medieval hilltop castle in Waldau , a district of Vohenstrauß in Upper Palatinate Forest .

history

Builder and first owner of the castle was the Ministerialengeschlecht the Waldauer that the Burg Schellenberg built. In the early 13th century, first they built the castle keep , 1350, they extended him with the Palas and spiked existing buildings. In the 15th century, the Waldauer joined the two building units with an intermediate building.

At the beginning of the 14th century, half of the castle belonged to the Nothäfts after Albert von Nothracht had married a woman from the Waldau. This half came into the hands of King Ludwig IV in 1326 and was added to the Palatinate by the house contract of Pavia . 1394 enfeoffed Elector Rupprecht III. Tobias and Heinrich the Waldauer with the Veste Waldau, the blood court there and the wild ban . The last of this family was Jörg von Waldau. In 1545 he sold his property to Willibald von Wirsberg .

For a short time from 1560 to 1562 the Köckritz owned the castle. After the Wirsbergers died out, Elector Ferdinand Maria von Bayern lent the manor to Field Marshal Adrian Freiherr von Enkevort . The Enckevort family were wealthy here until 1681. The son Ferdinand Franz Leopold von Enkevort sold the estate to Franz Ferdinand von Rummel in 1681.

The New Palace was built in the second half of the 17th century after parts of the castle had become dilapidated. In the 18th century, the keep and adjacent buildings were converted into a local church. In 1912 the place received a new church , the castle has not been used as a church since then. Today the castle is privately owned and can be visited on certain days.

Geotope

Serpentinite

Waldau Castle is built on serpentinite rocks. The bronzite- leading hardling's back is only exposed in a few places around the castle. The outcrops are largely overgrown. The rock is designated as a geotope and classified as important.
